Currently I’m busy creating a usability test plan for a rich Internet application prototype. At first I thought it wasn’t necessary to create this extensive document, isn’t it just enough to test the application yourself?
After creating this test plan I can promise you, it’s not enough to test an application yourself. Why? Well, you know how the application works, you built the darn thing! It’s better to test with users of your target audience. That will result in some extra debugging, but it’ll reward you with a better and more stable application in the end.
A test plan, how do I create one?
Good question. It was one of the first questions I asked myself. But it’s important not to reinvent the wheel again. There are templates available for usability testing. You can find them on the usability.gov website here.
These templates provide you with the content a good usability test plan needs. It even comes with some example content for inspiration. Keep in mind however, that you need to convert it for your own use. It’s not just a variation on the content offered in the template. It needs to fit your application. (more…)
