Get your feelings straight

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

There are two different designs. On one hand, you’ve designs that just show off the product and support it by adding some extra eye candy for the target audience to look at and see the product. On the other hand you got designs that affect the feeling and sense of your target audience. I personally think that sort of design works best.

Affecting feelings

A design that affects someones feelings, at best the feelings of your target audience, will probably be more successful than other forms of design. Why is that? I think it’s working better because people are more attached to the commercial. They feel better seeing it or they think they’re going to feel better after they used or bought the product.

Food designs do a particular good job on this. When you’re an icecream lover, you’ll probably get hungry when seeing a magnum design….you know, with the Belgium chocolate that melts in your mouth….instant pleasure! I’m wanting one this instant!

I’m as always pretty late to the game but it’s a hot and steaming topic right now, Google+’s real name policy….or to state it officially their “common name” policy. This means you are supposed to use a name on your profile which people know you by in daily life….okay, that sounds pretty much like a real name :-) .

At first I didn’t want to discuss the subject at all, too much trolling and complaining without the use of proper arguments. A lot of the chatter is still the same, but a few posts contained some legit discussions. Those posts made me understand the matter a whole lot better and I just want to put that in black and white here on my blog. (more…)

Advising your client on design

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

As a designer, especially an independent one, you’ll be advising your clients a lot. It comes with the turf. I’m a designer myself in charge of all designs that need to be created within my company.

During the process it’s up to the designer to give the best advice possible when it comes to design terms. For example a website layout or text placement in a brochure, it’s the designers job to figure out the best possible way to do it. Sometimes you’ll need to convince your superiors and / or clients.

Tell them what YOU think would be best

When you need to give some advice for a choice in navigation, for example, it’s wise to discuss what’s best for the project. It’s kind of logical but people are forgetting this part. Making choices happens ad-hock a lot. (more…)
